Teaching
Currently: Houston City College
Past: Villanova University, Collegium Institute at the University of Pennsylvania
When I teach, my goal is to invite students beyond the tyranny of utility that often defines their relationship to education and encourage them to explore the intrinsic value of thought and inquiry.
While I acknowledge the instrumental benefits that philosophy provides, such as critical thinking, written communication, verbal communication, intellectual flexibility, logic, and exploring diverse perspectives, I remind students that philosophy, at its core, celebrates the joy of intellectual exploration.
I have taught students from a wide range of economic, geographic, religious, and educational backgrounds. I have even taught retirees. In all cases, I facilitate a Socratic and discussion-based pedagogy.
This interest has led to my involvement with the Human Horizons Initiative at Houston City College. This Teagle Foundation-funded project brings liberal arts education centered on transformative texts in human history to underserved populations.
